When the Past Finds You Again

Hi Reader!

Lately, I've been thinking about things that I used to spend A LOT of time on: soccer, travel, academic archaeology, etc.

They formed a large part of my identity during specific periods of my life and occupied a lot of my time; however, how I "do" them now looks really different.

When it comes to archaeology, I've spoken with some archaeologist friends who have jobs outside the field about how archaeology now fits into their lives.

For those who were over it, they were happy to do something else.

For those who still like the field, it was honestly trickier.

Time, bandwidth, money, and access to opportunities are major culprits that prevent folx from continuing to engage with archaeology.

In my recent podcast episode, Dr. Sneh Patel and I explore how volunteering and giving back can be a way to flex those archaeology skills we spent a lot of time cultivating. While it may not be the right fit for everyone, it's a perspective worth considering.

If you're curious, the conversation is linked below :)

Sharing things that sparked my curiosity recently

🏀 Michael Jordan in rare interview: ‘I haven’t picked up a basketball in years’ - NBC News
This short (1:41) video articulates many of the feelings that some of my friends, who played sports at a high level in the past, have experienced. It was an interesting watch.

Gribshunden Interactive Visualisation System
I really enjoy 3D models, especially of excavations! They really help me visualize the process and interpretation. The Gribhunden was featured in last week's Artifact of the Day video, and you can click the link above to see 3D models of the 2019 and 2021 excavations.

Hi Reader! When I was pregnant this year, podcasts were my go-to content format as I drove to and waited at a doctor's appointment. After giving birth, I got an email about Jaime Roque's podcast, ReCurrent - a podcast about what we gain by keeping the past, present. I truly enjoyed the first season, and I was thrilled to have Jaime on my podcast, Curiosity Meets The Past, in the midst of ReCurrent's second season. His episode came out today! There are so many resonant gems in his episode, but...

Hi Reader! This past Sunday, I returned from a multi-day festival put on by the Independent Media Initiative. They host independent creators in the video and podcast world. It was my 2nd year attending, and I LOVED IT!Connecting with fellow creators refueled my creativity surrounding my archaeology content, and I have some fun things planned for 2026! I'll also be sure to share some of my fellow creators' work in this and upcoming newsletters. We also released a podcast episode (see below) with...

Hi Reader! So the last 3 videos on my channel had an unplanned theme - they were all animal-related! However, besides one of the videos, the link to animals isn't completely clear from the title and thumbnail. Still, our connections to animals can reveal a lot about us. It reminded me of a book I read in grad school called, Social Zooarchaeology by Nerissa Russell. It takes a holistic view when considering human-animal relations over time. Basically, it looked at many ways we've engaged with...
